Penrhyn Castle

Penrhyn Castle imagePenrhyn Castle was originally a medieval fortified manor house, founded by Ednyfed Fychan. In 1438, Ioan ap Gruffudd was granted licence to crenellate and he founded the stone castle, when adding a tower house. Sited at the angle of a square courtyard, it defend the gateway, chapel and great hall. Sadly only the original spiral stairs can now be seen, with the vaulted basement and other masonry being incorporated into a dramatic 19th century neo-Norman mansion, founded by George Dawkins Pennant.

Penrhyn's attractions include a formal walled garden, extensive informal gardens, a dolls museum, an industrial railway museum, a model railway museum and an adventure playground. It has views over the Snowdonia mountains.

Penrhyn Castle is located a mile east of Bangor, at Port Penrhyn, off Ffordd Llandegal. 14 miles south-west of Conwy, on the A55.

The site is owned by The National Trust and is open, Wednesday to Monday 25th March to June, September to 29th October 12:00-5:00pm, July and August 11:00-5:00pm.
